‘It is a tragedy that in the whole world, there is no place where women and girls are safe from violence, either at home or in public places’,-Professor Mukami McCrum 2010.
Join our global campaign to end violence against women and girls through education, challenging negative attitudes and changing mindsets.
During 16 Days of Action, KWISA remembers and honours Rebecca Cheptegei, and all other women and girls who have been murdered, raped, sexually harassed, assaulted and abused and had their human rights violated anywhere in the world.
Rebecca was a Ugandan athlete, marathon runner, and former world champion in mountain running. On 1 September 2024, she was attacked doused in petrol and set on fire at her home in Kenya by her former partner. Rebecca was the fourth athlete in Kenya to country to have been killed under similar circumstances since 2021.
Do you know that:
- A woman is killed every 10 minutes
- Globally, an estimated 736 million women have experienced physical and/or sexual violence
- 1 in 4 adolescent girls who have been in a relationship have already been physically, sexually, or psychologically abused by a partner.
Every year between 25 Nov and 10 Dec KWISA joins with activists across the world to remind people that violence against women is a scourge and a stain on families, communities and societies, and it requires urgent and concerted effort to end it.
